1) My #1 tip is to fill up every time you go to the pumps! Prices just be higher next time you visit. But this advice flies in the face of tip #12 - 'lighten your load' so you have to decide this one for yourself. For a small family saloon I'd say fill 'er up. For a big tanked gas guzzler I suggest half a tank or less.
2) While you're at the gas station check your tire pressure is correct. When you have time ask your local mechanic to check the tires 'balance' too. Probably the best ‘day to day’ gas saving tip in this list.
3) Ask your mechanic to clean or change your air filter and to tune up the engine too. Or do it yourself it ain't so hard!
4) Go easy on the gas pedal when starting up or accelerating. If using a manual use the gears to gradualy build up speed.
5) Avoid braking, when slowing ease off the gas instead.
6) Listen for the 'sweet spot' when changing gears to know when your engine is at it's happiest i.e. not straining and over revving.
7) Stuck in a jam? Turn off your engine - meditate on the the meaning of life for a while..
8) Why not 'coast' down those big hills? Get into 'Neutral' or simply depress the clutch. No good in Florida, Illinois, Louisiana or Kansas I'm afraid.
9) Do one BIG shop in one BIG superstore or mall once a week.
10) Shop on the net and take advantage if your local supermarket offers 'Free Delivery' - more fool them, right?
11) Avoid Cruise Control on the freeway, it's not as fuel efficient as you are, really!
12) Lighten your load. Carry a minimum of passengers and stuff (unless you're in a car pool).
13) Make sure your fuel cap is tightly screwed in place. Don't let any of your precous fuel evaporate from a loose fitting fitting!
14) Get into that fast truck's slipstream like they do at Daytona ( eerm not sure about this one).
These tips to save gas WILL save you some money but you should seriously consider fitting something to your car's engine that improves the combustion process and saves you real money fast! Tell me more >>>
